MoMo's Commitment to Fighting Fraud and Enhancing Financial Inclusion in Ghana

The Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Money Limited (MoMo), Shaibu Haruna, has reiterated the company’s dedication to investing in robust security measures to combat fraud and cybersecurity threats in the mobile money sector. Haruna emphasized that fraud remains a significant obstacle to advancing digital and financial inclusion in Ghana.

Haruna expressed deep concern over the ongoing challenges posed by MoMo fraud. He highlighted that tackling fraud is a top priority for Mobile Money Limited, and the company is committed to working closely with all stakeholders to enhance public awareness and promote safer practices.

“MoMo fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money LTD, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives,” Haruna stated.

He underscored the critical role of customers in safeguarding their accounts, urging them to protect their PINs, avoid clicking on unsolicited links, and be wary of fake SMS messages or instructions from unknown callers.

“Let me use this platform to emphasize that every customer is the first and last line of defense. We need to protect our PINs and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages, or following the instructions of any random caller,” Haruna stressed.

Haruna made these remarks during the celebration of MoMo’s 15th anniversary in Accra, under the theme: “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial & Digital Inclusion.” The event marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s digital payment evolution, driven largely by the widespread adoption of MoMo and the increasing convenience of mobile transactions.

Over the past 15 years, MoMo has played a pivotal role in transforming Ghana’s financial landscape. Haruna noted that while the company has achieved considerable success, challenges remain that require collective efforts to overcome. These include addressing gaps in financial and digital inclusion to ensure broader access to mobile money services across the country.

“Despite the successes chalked up over the last 15 years, there are still some challenges we face, and it is important for us to look at how we can collectively address these issues and continue to drive financial, digital, and economic inclusion in Ghana,” Haruna said.

One of the critical challenges highlighted by Haruna is the existing gaps in mobile connectivity, particularly in rural and remote areas. Despite improvements in mobile network coverage, these gaps hinder the full realization of digital financial inclusion.

Haruna reaffirmed MoMo’s commitment to investing in digital infrastructure to promote widespread connectivity and ensure that all Ghanaians, regardless of their location, can access mobile money services.

“We remain committed to providing a great customer experience to all our customers, regardless of their location. Our primary focus is to put service support at the fingertips of our customers to minimize the need for them to travel long distances or wait for an extended period at our touchpoints to have an issue resolved,” he stated.

Haruna also highlighted the significant impact MoMo has had on various sectors, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), education, healthcare, and government services. He emphasized that MoMo has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the banked and unbanked populations, thus promoting greater financial inclusion.

As MoMo continues to expand its services, the company remains focused on fostering partnerships with regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and technology partners to drive further growth and innovation. These collaborations have been vital in supporting MoMo’s development and ensuring that the service meets the evolving needs of its users.

To commemorate its 15th anniversary, MoMo has planned a series of activities, including market launches in major cities, new service rollouts, customer promotions, and an awards night to recognize outstanding contributors. These events will celebrate MoMo’s journey from a simple mobile money transfer service to a comprehensive financial platform offering loans, insurance, international remittances, and investment opportunities.

MoMo's evolution reflects the broader trends in Ghana’s digital payment landscape, which is rapidly becoming one of Africa’s fastest-growing markets. The increasing adoption of e-commerce and mobile payments highlights the growing preference for digital financial solutions due to their convenience and security.

The 15th-anniversary celebration of MoMo is not only an opportunity to reflect on past achievements but also a moment to renew the company’s commitment to driving progress in Ghana’s financial landscape. Haruna’s remarks underscore MoMo’s dedication to enhancing security, expanding access, and ensuring that every Ghanaian can benefit from the opportunities presented by digital financial services.

As MoMo continues to lead the way in financial and digital inclusion, the company’s efforts will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Ghana’s economy. By addressing the challenges of fraud, connectivity, and customer support, MoMo is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of millions of Ghanaians and contribute to the country’s ongoing economic development.
